Moving Through the Niggles: Why Pain Isn’t a Stop Sign

By Elise Badger | Physiotherapist, Āhua Studio Founder & Director, Movement Instructor and Mum of 3

When pain strikes, our default reaction is often fear or frustration. We freeze, pull back completely and assume our workout routine is off the table until we are 100% healed. But pain isn’t always a stop sign - it’s just a signal to pivot.

The Non-Linear Path Back to Movement

Returning to exercise, especially after a major life event or injury, is rarely a straight line. After my third baby, severe knee pain hit. Everyday tasks suddenly felt like monumental challenges. Walking downstairs, lunging and even kneeling on the floor to change a nappy were completely out of the question.

As a physiotherapist, my natural reaction could have been to write off movement altogether until the pain vanished completely. But I knew better - I didn’t need to stop moving; I just needed to move differently.

Adapt the Movement, Don’t Stop Moving

When an injury or niggle pops up, total rest is rarely the best long-term solution. Quitting movement altogether often leads to stiffness, loss of strength and an increased fear of moving again.

Instead of stopping, try adopting a mindset of adaptation:

  • Adjust Your Load: Lower the resistance, trim the range of motion or swap out high-impact movements for low-impact alternatives.

  • Commit to Rehab: Treat the root cause of the pain with targeted exercises rather than just waiting for it to clear up.

  • Lean on the Experts: Rely on experienced instructors and health professionals to help modify your workouts safely.

By modifying my load, staying consistent with rehab and relying on our team at Āhua Studio to adapt my workouts, I wasn't just able to keep moving - I built my strength back completely.

Pain is Information, Not a Sentence

Niggles and aches are your body’s way of communicating. They provide valuable feedback about load management, biomechanics and recovery. I’m stronger than ever now. I still get the occasional niggle, but I’ve learned to listen to my body rather than fear it.

Whether your goal is to stay agile for everyday life, protect against future injury or build lifelong physical resilience, movement should meet you where you are today. That is why our physiotherapist-designed classes at Āhua Studio focus on individual technique, safe modifications and movement confidence for years to come.

Don't Let a Niggle Keep You Sidelined

If an ache, pain or post-injury niggle is keeping you from doing what you love, don't write off movement entirely.

  1. Listen to your body instead of pushing through sharp pain.

  2. Work with an expert to treat what needs treating.

  3. Find a new way to move while your body heals.
